How to Balance Question Paper Difficulty
Balance a paper by looking at the work students must do, not only at question labels. Include accessible entry points and enough application or reasoning to reveal deeper understanding. The right balance depends on the assessment purpose and what the class has practised.
There is no universal easy-to-hard ratio
A diagnostic check, routine chapter test and extension assessment serve different purposes. Applying the same percentage split to all three can distort the evidence you collect. Start with the learning goals and the decisions you will make from the results.
Audit the paper's demand
Label each question by the main skill it assesses and the number of reasoning steps required.
Note what support is provided and whether the context or method is familiar to the class.
Compare the marks and estimated time across recall, application and reasoning items, looking for over-concentration.
Adjust or replace items that duplicate demand, introduce untaught content or create an unintended time bottleneck.
Put it into practice
Example: hidden imbalance
A paper with ten short definitions and one long application may appear mixed, but most of its questions test recall. Conversely, if the application carries most marks, one misunderstanding can dominate the score. Check both question count and mark weighting before deciding the paper is balanced.
