How to Create and Manage Different Test Versions
Give each test version a clear purpose and label before sharing it. For equivalent assessments, hold the learning goals and marks steady. For a retest, assess the same skills with fresh items. In both cases, make sure students receive the intended version and matching instructions.
Version management can undermine good questions
If links and titles are unclear, students may attempt the wrong test or a teacher may review the wrong key. Online delivery also makes it easy for a link to be forwarded, so distribution and submission settings need checking alongside the content.
Prepare versions for online use
Decide whether versions are parallel papers, retests or different levels of practice; do not compare them as interchangeable without checking.
Label each draft with the class, purpose and version code, and keep the total marks appropriate to that purpose.
Review the questions and key, then record which group should receive each published link.
Check submission controls and student identification fields before sending the links, and keep results attached to the correct version.
Put it into practice
Example: a retest after feedback
Keep the same equation-solving skills but change values and contexts. Avoid repeating a worked answer from the feedback session. Label the new test “Equations retest B” so its results are not confused with the first attempt.
Before you share
- A different title does not make two papers equivalent in difficulty.
- Explain retest conditions consistently, including whether notes may be used.
How EduVetta helps
EduVetta supports separate editable tests with public links, student identification and teacher-set submission limits. Publish each reviewed version separately and use its results and Excel export to keep the records clear. Equivalent difficulty remains a teacher review task.
