How to Create Useful Notes While Teaching
Create notes while teaching by treating the board as a developing explanation. Give each section a purpose, keep complete worked examples together and distinguish final conclusions from exploratory work. Students should be able to follow the saved version after your spoken explanation has ended.
Live board work can become a scattered record
Ideas added in the margins, arrows across the screen and overwritten calculations may work during discussion but become difficult to read later. A small amount of structure during the lesson reduces the need to rewrite everything afterwards.
Make teaching and note-making work together
Start with the lesson question and reserve clear areas or pages for definitions, examples and practice.
Write the reasoning beside important steps instead of leaving only a sequence of answers.
Mark corrections visibly and restate the final rule after exploring an incorrect approach.
Before ending, add a short conclusion and check that the notes have a readable order when saved.

Use one area for “part-to-part versus part-to-whole”, another for a worked class example and a final area for independent practice. If students confuse the denominator, write the reason next to the corrected fraction. The saved notes then preserve the learning from the mistake.

- Say when you are exploring a possibility so students do not copy it as the final method.
