How to Make a Balanced Test From a Chapter
Plan the test before drafting questions: decide what it should measure, how long students have and how the marks will be distributed. A chapter test should sample the important learning fairly, rather than simply include the first questions that are easy to write.
A collection of questions is not yet a test
Without a plan, a paper can over-test one section, repeat the same skill or require more writing than the available time allows. The test needs a sensible relationship between coverage, challenge, marks and duration.
Build the test from a blueprint
List the taught chapter sections and allocate marks according to their importance and teaching emphasis.
Choose a mix of question types that can reveal the intended learning, including explanation where recall alone is insufficient.
Draft the questions and answer key together, checking that the marks reward the work actually required.
Attempt the paper yourself, then allow students time for reading, thinking, working and checking before setting its duration.
Put it into practice
Example: a twenty-mark chapter test
For a chapter on linear equations, you could allocate four marks to interpreting equations, eight to solving them and eight to word problems. This is an illustrative plan, not a universal ratio. Adjust it to the learning goals and the time spent on each area.

- Avoid placing all the demanding questions at the end if that makes time management unnecessarily difficult.
