How to Create an Assignment From a PDF
Use only the PDF sections needed for the assignment and check that the content is readable before generating a draft. Decide whether students will receive the source and whether the task asks them to retrieve information, interpret evidence or apply an idea.
The source must work for the student too
An assignment based on a diagram is incomplete if the student cannot see the diagram. A scanned reading may also be difficult to search or read on a phone. Review access and legibility as part of the task design, not only during generation.
Prepare a source-based assignment
Identify the relevant pages and remove unrelated material from the source you provide where practical.
Check text, tables and diagrams for reading order, missing symbols and unclear labels.
Write tasks that specify what students should do with the material, including evidence or explanation requirements.
Provide the permitted source access students need and review the draft against the original PDF before sharing.
Put it into practice
Example: a data interpretation task
For a PDF chart of rainfall, ask students to compare two months and support the comparison with values. Include or provide the chart. Do not ask students to infer causes the chart does not establish unless the task explicitly invites a justified hypothesis.
Before you share
- Use only material you are entitled to upload and distribute.
- Do not assume a generator has correctly interpreted image-only pages or complex tables.
