How to Make an Assignment From Lesson Notes
Identify the method or idea demonstrated in the notes, then ask students to use it in a new but comparable task. Supply the information that shorthand notes leave out. An assignment should build on the notes without becoming a copying exercise.
Notes preserve examples, not always independent tasks
A worked solution already includes the answer and may rely on something said aloud. Students need a fresh prompt with a clear expectation, especially when the original notes contain fragments, abbreviated labels or unfinished class discussion.
Turn notes into independent practice
Identify the essential concept and the example students should be able to follow.
Expand any shorthand or missing context before using the notes as a generation source.
Change the values, evidence or situation while keeping the reasoning appropriate to what was taught.
Add a brief explanation requirement and check that the task can be completed from the supplied notes and expected prior knowledge.
Put it into practice
Example: use a model paragraph
If the notes analyse a persuasive paragraph, ask students to write a new opening on a different topic and explain one technique they used. This checks whether they can apply the model. Asking them to copy the annotated paragraph would produce much weaker evidence.
