How to Send Homework Students Can Start Independently
Send homework that students can start using what they learned in class. State the task, point to a relevant example and explain what to hand in. Keep the instructions specific enough that a parent or classmate does not have to interpret the assignment for them.
Homework fails when the starting point is missing
A page number alone may not identify which questions to complete or which method to use. New material presented as routine practice can also make homework depend more on outside support than on the student's learning.
Prepare an independent homework task
Choose work that practises a taught skill and keep the amount appropriate to its purpose.
Point to one class example students can use if they get stuck, without giving away every answer.
State question numbers, required working and the due date in the assignment message.
Tell students how to submit and what to do if they reach a step they cannot explain.

“Complete questions 2, 4 and 6 using the balance method. Show the operation applied to both sides. If you get stuck, compare your first step with today's worked example and mark the line where your reasoning stops.” This produces more useful evidence than unexplained blank answers.
